In 2009, Copperfield made his first live TV appearance for some time at the 44th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards, performing two illusions with singer Taylor Swift. The first of these was the "Elevator Production" illusion he had often used to open his own shows, in which he made Swift appear inside an apparently empty translucent-sided glass elevator. In the second illusion, he sawed Swift in half in the same Clearly Impossible sawing that he regularly used in his 1990s shows to saw his supermodel wife Claudia Schiffer in half.

From 1994 to 1999, Copperfield was married to the supermodel Claudia Schiffer. They first met in 1993, when Schiffer attended one of Copperfield's stage shows and was invited up out of the audience to take part in his "Flying" illusion. Later that year, they appeared together on German TV performing the famous illusion of "Sawing a Woman in Half", with Schiffer being sawed in half by Copperfield and the TV show's host. While they were married, and when not occupied by her modelling work and other commitments, Schiffer often appeared in Copperfield's stage shows as a special guest assistant in a number of illusions. There was speculation that Schiffer was not actually Copperfield's wife, but was instead a contractor working for him. The popular German tabloid Bild published a fax from Copperfield's management to Schiffer, informing her of Copperfield's itinerary, where she should appear with Copperfield, and her fees. Copperfield labeled the fax a forgery. Richard Jeffries, the father of Schiffer's next partner, art dealer Tim Jeffries, stirred up the controversy further when he publicly stated that Copperfield never had sexual relations with Schiffer. Copperfield's retort was that since Jeffries was never in their bedroom, he couldn't know.
New page

Clearly Impossible is a variation of the illusion sawing a woman in half devised by Jonathan Pendragon.

Description
The illusion is very similar in principle and performance to the older "Thin Model" versions of sawing a woman in half, with the exception that the boxes used to cover the assistant being divided are clear, rather than opaque. In basic concept, it is very similar to the transparent sawing developed by Les Arnold in the late 1970s. However, in the Pendragons version, the boxes are much smaller, and are never covered at any point during the illusion. As a result, the assistant within the boxes remains in full view throughout, making this a particularly baffling illusion for the audience.

Performance
The illusion usually begins with the magician showing the audience a low table, designed to split into two halves. The main assistant is then introduced, and lays down on the table. Other assistants then place two boxes over the assistant, with clear sides and tops. As the upper box is placed over them, the main assistant extends their arm out of the open side of the box, while their head and feet extend out of the ends of the two boxes. Small stocks are then used to restrain the assistant's feet and neck. Because the boxes have clear sides, the audience is able to see right through them, and can see that the assistant has not curled up inside the upper box, as is described in many commonly available magic books for the "Thin Model" sawing. The magician then cuts through the box using either a saw or sword (although some performers skip this step), and dividers are placed into the box either side of the cut. With the dividers in place, the two halves of the table are unlocked and pulled apart. As the assistant has been in full view of the audience throughout the illusion, it appears that they have been separated into two halves, the impossibility of this situation helping to give the illusion its name. The halves of the table are then pushed back together, the dividers removed, and the unharmed assistant released from the stocks and boxes.

Notable performances
While she was married to David Copperfield, and not otherwise occupied with modelling work, Claudia Schiffer often assisted Copperfield in his stage shows as a "special guest assistant". Part of these shows was a performance of Clearly Impossible, with Schiffer as the assistant being sawed in half by Copperfield.

While presenting SM:TV Live, British TV presenter Cat Deeley was the first British celebrity to be sawed in half in a version of Clearly Impossible.

During a promotional visit to Europe, Jessica Simpson participated in a performance of the illusion where she was sawed in half by illusionist Hans Klok, who used a large circular saw to divide her in two.

When she appeared on a Mexican talk show, Penelope Cruz took part in a performance of this illusion.

At the 44th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards, Taylor Swift was sawed in half by David Copperfield using his version of the illusion.

New page

Philippa Hamilton-James (previously known as Philippa Forrester) (born September 20, 1968 in Winchester, Hampshire) is a British television and radio presenter producer as well as an author.

Education
Philippa was educated at Westgate School, a co-educational comprehensive school in Winchester, Hampshire, and at Peter Symond's College in the same city.

Career
Philippa first worked for the BBC as a presenter on Children's BBC alongside Toby Anstis from July 1990 until 1994 (she was gunged on Get Your Own Back). She then went on to host many programmes including Tomorrow's World (with Peter Snow), Barking Mad, The Heaven and Earth Show and Robot Wars.

Her job as a pit reporter for Robot Wars was highlighted in the British sit-com Spaced. In episode 2.3 "Mettle," Simon Pegg's Character Tim is explaining the name of the robot he and Mike (Nick Frost) built to Daisy (Jessica Hynes) and he says "Phillipa would have loved it." He goes on to explain that she no longer is on Robot Wars because she had a baby, and then asks Daisy to interview him and pretend to be Phillipa. The mock interview is conducted with sexually suggestive questions/answers about the robot. The joke ends when Mike enters looking off put, and Tim explains Mike usually likes to be Phillipa.

She also co-presented the BBC's coverage of the total solar eclipse of August 1999. At the end of the same year she was also part of the corporation's team covering the turn of the new Millennium, and was duped into appearing on the spoof documentary Brass Eyes notorious 2001 paedophilia special, in which she wore a large pair of gloves, and explained how a paedophile could use them to touch children through a screen, such as a television screen.

Philippa and her husband are currently producing a new four part series for BBC television, to be shown in the spring of 2010. In diary form, the series follows the wildlife to be found in the garden of their home near Bristol, UK, concentrating on the conservation and protection aspects.
The couple live just outside Bath, Somerset, run Halcyon Media which specialises in wildlife productions, and have three sons. The arrival of the first, Fred, in 2000, is described in her book The River. Since getting married, Philippa has gone by her married name of Philippa Hamilton-James for both professional and private purposes.

She is an avid environmentalist and took a part-time degree in Ecology and Conservation at Birkbeck, University of London when presenting Tomorrow's World. Her love of nature conservation has continued throughout her life and she is now the vice-president of the Avon Wildlife Trust.
